How to Reverse a Video and Make a Boomerang Effect

Oct 24, 2026

Reversing a clip is one of the quickest ways to make ordinary footage look strange or playful: smoke flows back into a cup, a diver rises out of the water, a spill tidies itself up. Play the same clip forward and then backward and you get a boomerang, which also loops, because it finishes on the frame it started on. This guide shows how to do both in a browser and when a seamless loop works better than a boomerang.

Reverse, boomerang and seamless loop

The three effects are often confused, but they look different on screen.

EffectWhat playsLoops cleanly?Good for
ReverseThe clip backwards, onceOnly if the first and last frames matchSurprise and "rewind" moments
BoomerangForward, then backwardYes, but the motion changes direction at each endShort, playful gestures
Seamless loopForward, with a smooth transition back to the startYes, and the motion keeps going one wayBackgrounds, products, ambient scenes

How to reverse a video online

The reverse video tool runs in your browser. It does not need an account or credits, and your video is processed on your device.

  1. Open Reverse video and upload an MP4, MOV or WebM file of up to 5 minutes and 300MB.
  2. Click Reverse video and wait while it is processed. The tool reverses the whole clip as it is; it does not trim or select a range.
  3. Play the result, then click Download reversed video to save it as an MP4.

The tool also tries to reverse the sound. If reversing with sound fails, it tries again without sound, so the result is silent. Reversed speech and music sound backwards, so for most clips you will want to mute the audio or replace it later.

Reversing holds the whole clip in memory, so long or high-resolution files may fail on phones and other devices with limited memory. A few seconds is usually all the effect needs. To reframe for a Story or Reel, crop the video before or after reversing.

How to make a boomerang effect from any video

A boomerang is the original clip followed by its reversed copy. LoopVideo reverses the clip but does not join two different files, so the second step happens in an editor.

  1. Reverse the clip with the reverse video tool and download it.
  2. Put the original clip and the reversed copy one after the other in any video editor, such as CapCut, iMovie or Premiere Pro.
  3. Optional: remove the first frame of the reversed copy. It is the same as the last frame of the original, and cutting it avoids a tiny pause at the turn.
  4. Export the result, then set it to loop where you post it.

If you are comfortable with the command line, the free ffmpeg tool can do both steps at once. This version drops the audio, which rarely sounds right in a boomerang:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -filter_complex "[0:v]split[a][b];[b]reverse[r];[a][r]concat=n=2:v=1:a=0[v]" -map "[v]" boomerang.mp4

Boomerangs are usually short and fast, so try 1.5x or 2x with change video speed.

Boomerang on a phone

Phones have their own boomerang features, but they only work on certain footage. Instagram's Boomerang is a mode of the Stories camera, so it only works for clips you record there, not for videos already in your camera roll. On an iPhone, a Live Photo can be set to Bounce in the Photos app, which plays the moment forward and backward. For any other video, use the steps above. If the clip is for Instagram, read how to loop a video on Instagram to see which formats loop by themselves.

Which clips look good in reverse

Reverse works best when the backward motion is either obviously impossible or hard to notice:

  • Obviously impossible: pouring, splashing, jumping into water, throwing, tearing paper, falling objects. The fun is that the viewer can tell.
  • Hard to notice: slow camera moves, clouds, drifting smoke, swaying plants. These also make good boomerangs, because the change of direction is gentle.

Reverse looks wrong for people walking and talking, cars with readable signs, and any clip where the viewer needs to follow what happens. In a boomerang, fast motion that suddenly changes direction can look like a glitch rather than an effect.

When a seamless loop is better than a boomerang

A boomerang always returns to its first frame, but it does so by going backwards, so viewers see the motion stop and turn round. For waves, a product spin, a moving camera or a website background, the motion should keep going forward.

That is what an AI seamless loop does. Upload the original clip to the LoopVideo workspace and choose the AI seamless loop. It generates a transition of about five seconds from the last frame back to the first, then exports one cycle that plays forward the whole time. AI requires sign-in, and email accounts must be verified. The one-time free trial adds a visible watermark, and one paid credit produces a watermark-free result.

The free repeat preview in the same workspace needs no account, so you can check whether the jump is visible before using AI. The full workflow is in how to make a video loop seamlessly. To add running time with reverse and other methods, see how to make a video longer.

FAQ

How do I reverse a video for free?

Use the reverse video tool in your browser. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. The reversed video downloads as an MP4.

Is my video uploaded when I reverse it?

No. The reverse tool processes the video in your browser on your device.

Does the sound play backwards too?

The tool tries to reverse the audio along with the picture. If that fails, it reverses the picture only and the result is silent. Reversed speech is not intelligible, so many people mute it or add music in an editor.

Can LoopVideo make the boomerang in one step?

Not yet. It reverses the clip, and you join the original and the reversed copy in an editor or with the ffmpeg command above. The AI seamless loop is a separate feature that loops forward instead of backward.

Can I reverse a GIF?

The tool accepts video files, not GIFs. Reverse the source video, then convert it to GIF. A boomerang works well as a GIF because it already returns to its first frame.

Why did reversing fail on my phone?

Reversing holds the entire clip in memory. Long or 4K clips can be too large for a phone browser. Try a shorter or lower-resolution version, or use a computer.
