Seamless Loop: Premiere Pro, CapCut, After Effects

Oct 24, 2026

Video editors do not have a "make seamless" button. Loop playback or a repeat setting only replays the clip, so the jump from the last frame to the first is still there. Editors hide that jump by hand. This guide shows the two classic techniques in Premiere Pro, CapCut and After Effects, what they cost you, and when an AI loop tool such as LoopVideo is quicker.

Software details were checked on 24 October 2026; menu names can differ between versions. LoopVideo is not affiliated with Adobe or CapCut.

The two editor techniques

1. Swap and dissolve. Cut the clip in the middle and put the second half first. The new end and start were neighbouring frames in the original, so the loop point is now smooth. The old jump has moved to the middle, where you hide it by overlapping the two halves for half a second to a second and dissolving from one to the other.

2. Ping-pong. Play the clip forward, then reversed. It always returns to the first frame, but the motion visibly changes direction at each end. See how to reverse a video for this boomerang-style loop.

Swap and dissolve keeps the motion going forward, so it is the usual choice for backgrounds. Its weakness is the dissolve itself: for a moment, two points in time are blended. That is invisible on water, smoke, clouds or abstract motion, but a moving person or object appears twice, like a double exposure. The overlap also makes the loop slightly shorter than the clip.

Premiere Pro

  1. Put the clip on track V1 and cut it roughly in the middle with the Razor tool.
  2. Move the second half to the start of the sequence. Put the first half on track V2 so it overlaps the end of the second half by about 15–30 frames.
  3. Fade the upper clip in across the overlap with Opacity keyframes from 0% to 100%.
  4. Set In and Out points so the export starts on the first frame of the second half and ends on the last frame of the first half.
  5. Export, then play the file on repeat to check the loop point.

For a ping-pong loop, duplicate the clip, open Clip > Speed/Duration and tick Reverse Speed on the copy.

Generative Extend in Premiere Pro is useful but is not a loop tool. It adds up to 2 seconds of AI-generated video to the start or end of a clip, using Adobe generative credits. It continues a shot; it does not connect the end back to the beginning. Adobe lists Premiere Pro at US$22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, with a 7-day free trial.

CapCut

CapCut works the same way on desktop, mobile and the web.

  1. Add the clip to the timeline and split it in the middle.
  2. Drag the second half in front of the first.
  3. Add a short dissolve-style transition, about half a second, at the join.
  4. Export and test the loop in a player set to repeat.

For a ping-pong loop, duplicate the clip and use CapCut's Reverse option on the copy. Some transitions and effects are marked Pro, and CapCut asks for a Pro subscription to export a project that uses them, so pick a basic transition to stay on the free version.

After Effects

  • Swap and dissolve: split the layer, move the second half to the start, overlap the first half on the layer above and keyframe its Opacity from 0% to 100% across the overlap. Trim the composition to the two neighbouring frames.
  • Just repeating: Interpret Footage > Main > Loop repeats a footage item a set number of times, and Time Remapping with loopOut("cycle") repeats a layer until its out point. Both are hard cuts, so they do not hide the jump. loopOut("pingpong") gives a ping-pong loop.

loopOut suits animation built in After Effects: when the first and last keyframes match, it loops perfectly. Filmed footage has no such keyframes.

When to use an editor, and when to use LoopVideo

Use an editor when the clip is part of a larger edit, when you need exact control over timing and sound, or when the footage is texture-like and a dissolve will be invisible. For faces, text and logos, try both: a dissolve may show a double image, and AI may distort fine details.

Use LoopVideo when the dissolve shows a double image, when you have many clips to loop, or when you do not have an editor. Upload the clip to the LoopVideo workspace and preview a normal repeat for free. If the jump is visible, choose the AI seamless loop. It generates a transition of about five seconds from the final frame back to the first and keeps the clip's sound, blended across the transition.

The AI cannot be steered with a prompt, and it can soften details or change a subject around the join, so review the result before publishing. AI requires sign-in, email accounts must be verified, and free AI results are for personal, non-commercial use. The full workflow is in how to make a video loop seamlessly. To change the frame first, crop or resize the video in your browser.

FAQ

Does Premiere Pro have a seamless loop feature?

No. Loop playback only repeats the clip in the monitor. You build the seamless loop by hand, usually by swapping the halves and adding a dissolve.

Why does my After Effects loop still jump?

loopOut("cycle") and Interpret Footage only repeat the footage; they do not blend the end into the start. Use swap and dissolve, or, for animation, make the first and last keyframes match.

Is an AI loop better than a cross dissolve?

Not always. A dissolve is predictable and works well on water, smoke and clouds. An AI transition avoids the double image on moving subjects, but check it for warped details. You can also edit in your usual editor, export, and make the loop in LoopVideo.
